Abby Wambach in BMW Super Bowl ad – Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
Monroe County native and soccer superstar Abby Wambach is one of several celebrities featured in a BMW ad to be aired during the Super Bowl next week.
The campaign will feature BMW’s Mini Clubman model. The 30-second commercial will air in the third quarter of the Feb. 7 game and will launch a six-month long campaign designed to help the public looks past “small” and “cute” labels with which the Mini is usually associated, according to BMW.
This week, BMW released three teaser ads — one featuring Wambach, one featuring pro tennis player Serena Williams and a third featuring pro skateboarder Tony Hawk.
The trio, along with rapper T-Pain, baseball legend Randy Johnson and actor Harvey Keitel, are set to be featured in the main ad.
In Wambach’s 90-second video, she looks directly into the camera and lists names she has been called in her 35 years, including butch, tomboy and lesbian.
“Those are things that, for me, never defined who I was, never defined how I played, never defined my individuality of my authentic self,” she said in the ad. “I don’t ever give anyone else the power to call me something and have me be affected by it.”
“I realize that we are all different and I accepted who I was at a pretty early age,” she said. “Once I accepted myself and who I was, I don’t care what you call me. The confidence just came to honor and own who you are. Period.”
Wambach in the ad then talks about driving a mini and why she likes the car.
Wambach, a Pittsford native, retired in December as the soccer player who scored more goals (184) than any other woman or man in the history of the sport.
